‘Stonewall’ is a graphic illustration of the dry stone walls found in the West of Ireland. Originally photographed as a series by Gaffney on Inismeann in the early 1990s, the painted works evoke a sense of ‘balance and grace.

The wall structure is painted as a solid black silhouette against a late evening sky of graduating azures. For the artist, the stonewall is the embodiment of human endeavour created with purpose and imagination in a form that is made from the sum of its own parts.

Stonewalls are an important element in the vernacular of the West of Ireland farm landscape.
